The Arctic Winter Games announced it would be postponing the 2022 event as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2022 games were set to be held in Wood Buffalo, Alta. from Mar. 6-12.

But after discussions with the host society, the municipality of Wood Buffalo and the Government of Alberta, it was decided the event would be postponed. A press release says no decision has been made for a new date.

The release says the decision was made for the health and safety of all the participants, coaches, volunteers, staff, spectators, and the host community.

The Arctic Winter Games is a circumpolar sport and cultural event for youth. It hosts up to 2,000 participants from Alaska, Greenland, Russia, Norway, Finland, the Northwest Territories, Yukon, Nunavut, Nunavik and northern Alberta.

The 2020 games that were set to be held in Whitehorse were also cancelled as a result of the pandemic.
