A man who was sent to receive medical treatment in Yellowknife after an altercation with multiple police officers along the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road is still in hospital, according to police.

On Monday morning, Fort Good Hope RCMP responded to a report of a female resident being assaulted. Police found a male suspect along the winter road carrying what police describe as an “edged weapon.” A spokesperson for the RCMP said three officers were on the scene at the time.

During an altercation between the man and multiple officers, the suspect suffered “non life-threatening injuries.” However, his injuries were serious enough that he was sent to Yellowknife for “further medical attention.”

“RCMP takes any allegation or reference to a possible injury while in custody very seriously,” reads an RCMP statement.

“The investigation is presently ongoing, and no further details will be released.”

Later on Tuesday, an RCMP spokesperson confirmed the suspect was still in hospital. Meanwhile, the female victim was released from the community health centre the same day.

The same spokesperson would not comment on the suspect’s injuries while the investigation is underway.
