Fort McPherson boater rescued

Police say the 31-year-old was reported missing on Saturday after travelling to his camp on the Husky Channel by boat.

The missing man's family chartered a helicopter which proved instrumental in finding him.

The rescue of a Fort McPherson man prods the warning from RCMP that it’s unsafe to travel on northern waterways at this time of year following

Police say the 31-year-old was reported missing on Saturday after travelling to his camp on the Husky Channel by boat.  They say the man failed to report his arrival at the camp, prompting an extensive search that was hampered by ice on the river and poor weather conditions. Efforts to reach the man’s camp by ATV also proved to be unsuccessful.

Family members chartered a helicopter and located the man on the shoreline of the Husky Channel Monday afternoon. RCMP say the man’s boat had become stuck in the ice halfway to his camp. They add that the man was not injured and was in good spirits.

Police say the incident serves as a reminder that travel on northern waterways at this time of year should be avoided unless it’s absolutely necessary.
