The department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) says a black bear that was spotted in Ndilǫ Thursday morning, has been put down.

“This was necessary to protect public safety as the bear had encroached on a number of homes and was displaying behaviors suggesting it had become habituated to city life,” a post on ENR’s  Facebook reads.

ENR wrote in an email the bear was spotted on Latham Island around 8 a.m. on Thursday.

ENR is warning residents to be careful of bear sightings.

The department encourages residents to never leave any garbage, food, or anything with odour unattended outside and to avoid walks alone at night.
