The Tlicho region’s largest community opened four new housing units yesterday, one step in the region’s battle against homelessness. The minister responsible for the NWT Housing Corporation, Alfred Moses was in attendance and helped cut the ribbon at the newly renovated bachelor housing units.
While it’s not the answer to all the housing challenges in Behchoko, he says “it’s a start.”
The Behchoko Friendship Centre is a partner is this project. Joel Hagstrom is a housing stablility worker helping the four residents selected to be part of this program. Part of Hagstrom’s job will to be on call to help the clients adjust to life in a housing unit, and to help them with their other life challenges that were at the root of their housing challenges.
Over 125 people are homeless, and struggling to find shelter in Behchoko.
