Women and children leaving domestic violence will soon have a new shelter in Hay River.

The Family Support Centre (FSC) will be running the new space for survivors of domestic violence.

The shelter will have 14 units and will be open to families across the North.

“The new shelter in Hay River will provide northern women and children fleeing violence, a safe and caring home to recover, rebuild and revive,” said Kristine Vannebo-Suwala, executive director of the Family Support Centre.

According to a news release, the shelter will also offer services like trauma recovery, as well as abuse education and prevention.

The FSC says one in three women in the NWT will suffer from family violence.

The federal government is contributing $3.2 million to the project, the territorial government $900,000, and $310,000 from Diane Haché, a retired Diavik employee that sold copper from wires used at the mine.

Construction on the space started in July 2021, and it is expected to be open this fall.
