GNWT extends handful of COVID-19 relief measures

NWT businesses and residents are getting an extension on some  COVID-19 relief measures.

The Government of the Northwest Territories is contributing $550,000 to support the relief measures, expecting approximately $5.2 million in savings through waived fees.

The funding will support licensed child care programs, in addition to waiving fees like truck permits, Deh Cho Bridge tolls, airport landing fees, and license fees at airports.

The added funding will pay for up to 75 percent of costs for child care operators and is available until September 30th.

“As the GNWT works on comprehensive plans for social and economic recovery, we are reviewing and assessing the need for various measures that were brought in to provide immediate relief in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Caroline Wawzonek, minister of Finance.

However, the GNWT will not change its support structure for businesses.

It will continue to offer low-interest loans despite calls from the business community to offer grants instead.
