Hay River orders evacuation for Vale Island, West Channel

The Town of Hay River has issued an evacuation notice for residents of Vale Island and West Channel.

The town issued the notice about 9 p.m. on Monday evening due to a “flood threat”.

In the notice posted to its Facebook page, the town is asking all residents to register at the Hay River Community Centre (Recreation Centre) or  by calling 833-699-0188.

For people who need assistance evacuating, they can call the above number.

CBC is reporting that hundreds of residents have been registered already at the centre since the order was issued.

In the Facebook notice, the town says emergency officials will keep an eye on the area and there will be daily updates on its Facebook page, as well as on www.hayriver.com/breakup. Residents can also receive updates by signing up for the Emergency Measures Email Subscription Service.

The town says accommodations are being assigned when residents are registered at the community centre. Residents can be placed at nearby hotels, the RV park, or Yellowknife hotels with transportation available to these locations at no cost.
