Updated December 12, 4:25 p.m. A previous version of this story noted the exact date the accused was to be in court. RCMP have since emailed media outlets requesting the specific date be removed to protect the identity of the victim. According to RCMP, the date was included in the original news release accidentally.
A 30-year-old man has been arrested after having a “sexual relationship” with a minor in Aklavik.
On December 5, Aklavik RCMP received information about the abuse and launched an investigation.
Police say in a news release that they discovered this “sexual activity” started when the victim was 14 years old and lasted over a year.
CKLB has asked RCMP if it considers the incident to be sexual assault or abuse; the news release stops short of any mention of abuse.
The man has been charged with one count of Sexual Interference and one count of Sexual Assault.
He is scheduled to appear in court early next year.
Police say the investigation is ongoing, and add they will not be releasing the name of the accused to protect the identity of the victim.
