Suncor Energy in Alberta is doing its part to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 by donating 40,000 N95 masks to the Federal Government which have found their way to the North.
“The Federal Government reached out and identified communities that desperately needed medical supplies,” Erin Rees, a spokesperson from Suncor Energy told CKLB Radio. “The communities identified by the government were, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon.”
Rees says over the weekend the company and the government helped distribute those masks to the communities in need. The masks are designed to filter out particles in the air that may carry the COVID-19 virus.
“It’s truly our honor to be able to play our part alongside all of Canadians and caring for each other through these challenging times,” Rees said.
Rees says the N95 masks are a tool that is used by their company during daily operations. After the need was identified by the Federal Government, Suncor Energy contacted its supplier to fill the gap in medical supplies for the North.
“We purchased them from the supplier and then donated them to the Federal Government for the North,” Rees said.
According to Rees, 16,000 masks were flown into the NWT to address the immediate need, while Iqaluit and Rankin Inlet in Nunavut received 6,000 each. The additional 12,000 masks were sent to Whitehorse in the Yukon.
Suncor Energy is a Canadian integrated energy company based in Calgary, Alberta.
