A Yellowknife man has been sentenced to five years in prison and ten years of probation for the possession and transmission of child pornography and for extortion.
Twenty-year-old Chase Straker was sentenced in an N.W.T. court on Monday, according to an RCMP release. He was found to have stored and transmitted child sexual abuse material that included images of prepubescent children.
He was also found to have used material from an American victim to extort her into sending more material.
The investigation included the execution of a search warrant at Straker’s house, and was completed with the assistance of the nonprofit Canadian Centre for Child Protection.
Once released from jail, Straker will be on probation with several conditions, including having to stay away from public parks and playgrounds, being barred from working or volunteering in positions that involve “being in a position of trust” with children and youth under 15, and being barred from having a non work-related social media presence.
