Chief and council elections will take place in Tthets’éhk’edélî (Jean Marie River) First Nation this fall.
This comes as the community rebuilds after devastating flooding hit in May; many residents are still displaced from their homes.
A press release says all residents and members must be notified of the election as many reside elsewhere.
“In the face of incredible adversity the community held an annual general meeting at which revisions to the Elections code were passed and a clear elections process outlined,” the release reads.
One of the accommodations for the election will be proxy voting, where an individual can give a representative the power to submit their vote.
The four council members will be appointed from the four family groups in the community, while the chief will remain an elected office.
Stanley Sanguez is the current chief of Jean Marie River.
The election will be conducted in accordance with the Tthets’éhk’edélî customary elections code
The nomination period for the chief election opens on Sept. 30 at 9 a.m. and closes Oct. 14 at 5 p.m.
The election for chief will take place on Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The nomination period for Youth and Elder Council Representatives will open on Oct. 28 at 9 a.m. and close on Nov. 4 at 5 p.m.
The election will take place on Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Ria Letcher will serve as the electoral officer.
