Former YKDFN Chief Edward Sangris passes away

Sangris served four consecutive terms as Dettah Chief starting in 2007.


Former Yellowknives Dene First Nation Chief Edward Sangris has passed away.

YKDFN announced his passing on social media on Tuesday morning.

Born and raised in Dettah, Sangris served four consecutive terms as Dettah Chief starting in 2007 before stepping down. He came from a political family, with his father Joseph serving as Chief for 32 years, and his brother Jonas serving for 12 years.

Immediately following the announcement of his passing, tributes and condolences began flooding in on social media. “He has dedicated most of his life in a leadership role, and may he be among our past great leaders, in the great hall,” wrote Behchokǫ̀ Chief Clifford Daniels.

“Learned so much from him and his passion to help his people,” wrote another commentator. “There will be a big void without him around. Thoughts and prayers to his family. Mahsi Cho for everything you have done.”

The cause of death was not immediately announced.
