The Charlie Zoe Nitsiza 4th Bi-Annual Handgame Tournament begins tomorrow in Whati and is offering $100,000 in prize money.
According to a Tłı̨chǫ Government news release, “In 2014, community members of Whati created Bi-Annual Handgame of the late Charlie Zoe Nitsiza, who passed away December 5, 2011. Charlie Zoe Nitsiza was a traditional man who enjoyed being on the land and taking part in traditional games”
“He would be seen at drum dances, feasts, handgames and outdoor events,” the Tłı̨chǫ Government stated. “He had a saying, it is good to be seen amongst your people, rather than keeping to yourself”.
Registration starts at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow at the Johnny Nitsia Cultural Centre. The events are scheduled from March 5th till March 8th.
The entry fee for teams is $1800 ($200 per player) and is open to residents aged 16 years and older. 50/50 and raffle tickets will be sold daily at the Cultural Centre.
