A Whati man has been found guilty of sexual assault for having sex with a 13-year-old girl at his home in August, 2016.

A jury in Yellowknife, made up of eight men and four women, deliberated for about four hours on Friday before convicting Cory Nitsiza, 29.

This was actually the third trial on the offence for Nitsiza – the previous two ending in mistrials when the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict.

Nitsiza is currently not in custody pending his sentencing.

He is to be back in court on June 17 to set a date for sentencing.

Nitsiza’s lawyer tells CKLB that he’ll be asking for a sentence of between one and two years
