Fort Simpson’s Jessie Loutit is bringing home a silver medal from the Pan American Games in Peru.

She and Larissa Werbicki from Saskatchewan captured Canada’s first rowing medal of the 2019 games. The Globe and Mail and Independent Sports News reports they rowed to silver with a finish in Lima with a time of seven minutes 36.06 seconds,  just behind Chile’s Melita Abraham and Antonia Abraham (7:31.44). Mexico placed third.

This is Werbicki and Loutit’s Pan American Games debut. Thursday’s silver is Loutit’s first international medal. Werbicki previously won silver at the 2014 world junior championships. In a post on Instagram Loutit writes, “Thank you to everyone for all of your support. Special shout out to my Family and @sportnorthfederation #MetisNation and #DFN that make it possible for NWT athletes to pursue their dreams.”
