Northwestel says a damaged fibre line leading Yellowknife is to blame for what it calls a major disruption of telecommunications services, including Internet connection, to the city and surrounding areas last night.

Northwestel states in an email that its technicians responded immediately and performed temporary repairs.

Service is now restored.

Northwestel states it will now investigate the cause of the fibre damage, and complete full repairs to the fibre line.

They state they will not comment on the nature or cause of the damage while the investigation is ongoing.

Northwestel has not stated where the damage occurred, how many customers were affected or exactly how long the outage lasted.

The company has apologized to customers who were impacted by the disruption.
