An investigation has been launched by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) after an RCMP officer was involved in shooting a 54-year-old man during a confrontation in Whitehorse.
According to a news release from the ASIRT, “At approximately noon, on March 2, RCMP officers were called to a residence in the Porter Creek neighbourhood to respond to a complaint involving a man armed with a firearm.”
Once on the scene, the Mounties located a man in a Ford truck in front of a residence.
The 54-year-old man, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was not injured according to RCMP and was arrested soon after without further incident.
The ASIRT state that, “A confrontation occurred and a single shot was discharged from an officer’s service weapon.”
A .44-calibre rifle was recovered from the vehicle following the incident. There were no injuries to police or other civilians.
Pursuant to an agreement between the Yukon and Alberta governments, investigations of serious incidents involving Yukon RCMP are conducted by ASIRT.
“ASIRT’s investigation will focus on the actions of police during this incident, while RCMP will maintain responsibility for the investigation into the initial complaint and the man’s subsequent actions,” the ASIRT stated. “As ASIRT’s investigation is underway, no further information will be released at this time.”
