Severe rainstorm hits Hay River

"We're hoping to get it cleaned up and put a plan together to open before the summer's out," says GNWT contractor.

Louise Falls Campground is temporarily closed after the wider South Slave region experienced a severe rainstorm Monday morning.

The Twin Falls Territorial Park – Lake Louise Falls Campground was the most heavily affected area, according to Garth Mackay, GNWT parks maintenance contractor, responsible for the parks in Hay River.

Reports of broken and uprooted trees falling on vehicles, property, and people are still being investigated after a woman had supposedly broken her arm from a falling tree, says Mackay.

“No calls were placed for service, regarding the incident,” says Cpl Walter Goliath, RCMP Hay River.

“I don’t know how we avoided a major catastrophe,” says Mackay.

He adds “we’re hoping to get it cleaned up and put a plan together to open before the summer’s out.”

The campground will be closed until further notice.
