Wildfire watch: Low to medium risk in southern regions

There are currently two active hotspots in the Northwest Territories. Both of these are holdover smoulderings outside of Fort Smith in the South Slave region, and Fire NWT states will be extinguished by crews with help from a helicopter.

Those are the only fires detected and first to date this year in the NWT.

Across the South Slave: Kakisa; Enterprise; and Fort Providence are low fire risk; with Hay River and Fort Smith being medium.

A reminder that both communities have already issued partial fire bans, other than in an approved fire pit.

In the Dehcho, Fort Liard is listed as medium, bumping up to high on Wednesday.

North Slave is also low, with the exception of Yellowknife assessed at medium risk.

Sahtu and Beaufort Delta regions risk is low.

Low risk status means to monitor campfires and use caution. A wildfire can still be sparked, but it is less likely to grow and spread.

Moderate status means to take extra caution by keeping campfires and burn piles as small as possible.
