A Yellowknife teen is facing several charges after stealing from a downtown business and assaulting police officers in the process — and it all started with a bottle of cologne.

Police were called to the scene on Wednesday evening after a security guard at the unnamed business stopped a 17-year-old male who was trying to shoplift. Police say the youth pulled a knife on the security guard and fled.

When police later found the suspect and tried to apprehend him, he assaulted the officers, spitting on one and kicking another several times.

In the end, police say, the incident was sparked over a bottle of Old Spice cologne, which was confiscated as the youth was arrested.

The youth is now facing several charges related to the theft and the assault of the officers. Anyone with information to share is encouraged to contact Yellowknife RCMP at 669-1111, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.nwtnu.crimestoppersweb.com.
