NorthwesTel has confirmed its phone service in several communities in the Sahtú and Beaufort Delta has been restored.

The telecom told CKLB the disruption was caused by a construction company damaging a fibre line just south of Norman Wells.

Residents in the Sahtú and Beaufort Delta needing RCMP assistance may need to find an officer in person.

Police in the region say there is a possible phone disruption that could prevent calls to RCMP and/or 9-1-1.

RCMP is advising anyone who can’t connect by phone to attend a detachment in person, or send someone on your behalf.

NorthwesTel says the outage is affecting residents in Inuvik, Fort Good Hope, Norman Wells, Tsiigehtchic, Aklavik, Fort McPherson and Deline.

“Our technicians are currently investigating and working to bring services back online as quickly as possible,” said Catherine Newsome, NorthwesTel’s communications officer. “Customers in impacted communities should expect to be without service for several more hours.”
