Residents picking up a copy of Northwestel’s directory will soon see the beautiful painting Stargazers adorning the cover.

The art piece is by Inuvik-based artist Tracy Blyth who won this year’s contest to have her art featured on the telecommunications company’s directory.

According to a news release, she’s entered the contest before but had never won.

“I mean, I really like my art, but it still surprises me when other people do, because it is kind of a personal taste thing,” she said in the release. “I’m still super excited.”

Blyth is a former art student and crafter who has called the NWT home for about 20 years; northern nature often inspires her work.

“Here in Inuvik, we have such brilliant colours. Everything is white (through winter) and then you have the northern lights – which light up everything. After you’ve been seeing white for so long, they’re just incredible. The colours up here are spectacular,” she said.

As part of winning the contest, Blyth is also taking home $5,000.

Northwestel says directory availability may vary due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A list of designated pickup locations in each community is available at nwtel.ca/phone-books.
