Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief George Mackenzie says he has requested a meeting with the department of infrastructure after the New Years Eve fatal collision on Highway 3.
“We cannot take this accident lightly. It was a very serious, bad accident,” Mackenzie says.
On Dec. 31 at approximately 5 p.m., RCMP received a call about a fatal collision on Highway 3. A 45-year-old man was killed in the collision that happened near Behchokǫ̀.
This is not the first accident on the highway, and Mackenzie says “unless we do something,” it might not be the last.
Mackenzie says on Monday he requested a meeting with the department to discuss potential solutions.
He says he is worried about what will happen in the next few weeks as the ice road is scheduled to open, significantly increasing traffic on the road.
“It’s going to be open so we need to be ready for it,” he says, “we would like to know what kind of regulations laws they have in place for heavy traffic.”
Mackenzie says he has heard many allegations of large trucks driving too close to other vehicles.
“Sometimes they’re very close, it’s dangerous, especially when there’s blowing snow behind them,” he says.
