Traveling to Whatì just got a whole lot easier.
The Government of the Northwest Territories announced the official name for the all-season road on Tuesday.
What was known as the Tłı̨chǫ All-Season road will now be called the Tłı̨chǫ Highway or Highway 9.
This new road will provide year-round access to Whatì and increase access to the communities of Gamètì and Wekweètì.
According to the press release, with an all-season road to Whatì, the winter roads to Gamètì and Wekweètì will likely open sooner and close later.
George Mackenzie is the Grand Chief for the Tłı̨chǫ Government.
“This road is the result of many years of planning, partnerships and hard work by former and present leaders and our collective governments. This is the way any projects on
Indigenous land should be developed,” he says,
The new highway is set to open in the fall of 2021.
