The Department of Infrastructure has published an update to its website saying construction of the Tłı̨chǫ all-season started up again on May 15.

As a result, the department says the Whatı̀ community access road will be closed from the winter road junction. It does not say how long the road will be closed.

“The GNWT and (North Star Infrastructure) understand that this road is used frequently and valued by community members,” reads the update. “We thank residents for their patience and understanding.”

The department says the road project “will play a significant part in the recovery” from COVID-19 in the NWT by bringing job opportunities.

However, Monfwi MLA Jackson Lafferty has previously criticized the low rate of local labour working at the site. In the previous session of the Legislative Assembly, he pointed out that less than half of the workers are Tłı̨chǫ.
