The Government of the Northwest Territories has clarified travel restrictions for Albertans near the border.

Smith’s Landing First Nation and Fort Fitzgerald residents are only allowed to enter the NWT to get gas, groceries, go to the post office or access health services.

Fuel and water delivery to these communities will continue from Fort Smith.

If any Smith’s Landing or Fort Fitzgerald residents have gone to other parts of Alberta in the past two weeks, they need special authorization to travel by air in the NWT from the Chief Public Health Officer.

A news release says this authorization will only be given in emergency situations.

Residents can email protectnwt@gov.nt.ca to apply.
