Feds and GNWT spend $5.5M for NWT social housing repairs
The focus on essential upgrades such as heating, plumbing, roofing, windows, doors, and foundations

The federal government, along with the GNWT announced more than $5.5 million in combined funding to help repair 150 social housing units in communities across the Northwest Territories. This funding will help extend the life of existing social housing units, ensuring they remain safe, functional, and livable for residents.
The breakdown of funding is as follows:
- Federal Government (CMHC): $2.25 million through the Affordable Housing Fund
- Housing NWT: $3.375 million
- Total Investment for this project: $5.625 million
These repairs are part of Housing NWT’s broader capital plan and will focus on essential upgrades such as heating, plumbing, roofing, windows, doors, and foundations.
The announcement was made by the Rebecca Alty, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Lucy Kuptana, minister responsible for Housing NWT and Erin Kelly, president and CEO of Housing NWT.
At the announcement, Minister Alty said: “Every Canadian has a right to a safe, affordable home to call their own. That is why our government is collaborating with territorial governments to deliver good, quality homes to areas that need them most. This project will improve affordable homes for residents in key areas across the Territories. It’s also another step forward in building an economy that serves everyone.”
“This joint investment will play an important role in improving our social housing and ensure units remain safe and livable for northern residents. By working in partnership, we’re able to deliver much-needed repairs that will improve the quality of life for families and individuals across the NWT.” Minister Kuptana said at the announcement.
The funding for this project is being divided into two avenues. $2,250,000 is being sent through the National Housing Strategy’s Affordable Housing Fund, while $3,375,000 will be sent to Northwest Territories Housing.
