A new housing facility will soon begin construction in Hay River.

An announcement was shared by Housing NWT that this new project will be replacing the current 28 unit building due to its advanced age, and will be replaced by a 30-unit, Singles Multi-Unit Residential Building.

This new building has been designed with help from SafeGrowth and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design to include special features that will help keep tenants safe. This includes clear sightlines around the property, and good lighting in shared spaces.

Lucy Kuptana, the Minister responsible for Housing NWT, called this project “an important step forward” for safe housing.

“By incorporating innovative design concepts, we are creating spaces that support well-being and promote more connected communities. By investing in these innovative solutions, we’re ensuring that residents have housing that meets their needs today and for generations to come.”

Construction on this building is set to begin next summer. The funding for this build is coming from a portion of Housing NWT’s three year, $150 million capital plan.
