Bootlegger busted for bringing booze from Dawson City to Tuktoyaktuk

RCMP seized a quantity of illicit alcohol while executing a search warrant at a residence in the alcohol-restricted community

An alleged bootlegger brought booze from Dawson City, Yukon, to Tuktoyaktuk, which is a restricted alcohol community, says RCMP.

Following information received that individuals from Tuktoyaktuk purchased a significant quantity of alcohol in the Yukon, Tuktoyaktuk RCMP began a liquor act investigation.

At approximately noon on November 27th, a search warrant was executed at a residence in the community.

During the search, RCMP officers located inside the residence 36 x 750 ml and 12 x 375 ml bottles of vodka.

As a result, one man was charged with:

  • Unlawful sale and supply of alcohol; and
  • Failure to comply with the section 2 of the Tuktoyaktuk Liquor Restriction Regulations – no person shall bring into the restricted area or possess within the restricted area, at any time, a quantity of spirits in excess or 2280 ml.

Tuktoyaktuk RCMP remains committed to addressing the harm bootlegging causes our Northern communities and encourages the public to share any information they have on suspected bootlegging with police.

The rules state:

No person shall bring into the restricted area or possess within the restricted area, at any time, within a 25 km of the Tuktoyaktuk Hamlet Office:

  1. a quantity of spirits in excess of 2280 ml; and
  2. within the restricted area, no person shall operate a vehicle
    1. having one to three adult occupants and transporting a quantity of spirits that exceed 2280 ml per adult occupant; or
    2. having four or more adult occupants and transporting a quantity of spirits that exceeds 9120 ml.

The restriction does not apply to a person authorized by the Hamlet Council to bring into the restricted area a greater quantity of spirits for consumption at a wedding, community event or other special event.
