A Yellowknife man has been sentenced to two years and one day in prison after pleading guilty to drug trafficking, RCMP say.

According to an update Thursday, Billy John McNeely pleaded guilty to one count of drug trafficking charge on March 31. In addition to his sentence, he received a 10-year firearms prohibition order and must submit a DNA sample to the National DNA Databank.

The case dates back to August 22, 2024, when Délı̨nę RCMP arrested McNeely at the community’s airport after receiving a tip that he was arriving by plane with drugs. Officers seized 77 grams of crack cocaine in his possession.

“This conviction represents a positive outcome to this investigation, sending a strong message to others involved in or considering drug trafficking in our Northern communities,” said Corporal Charles Bond, detachment commander of Délı̨nę RCMP.

Bond encouraged residents to report any information related to drug activity to help keep communities safe.
