A fire located 19 km outside Fort Liard was deemed ‘out of control’ on Sunday.

A total of five fire crews, three helicopters and two protection units have since been deployed to contain it.

The fire (FS002) is approximately 352 hectares in size, according to N.W.T Fire.

Today’s forecast calls for higher winds, with gusts reaching 35 to 50km an hour which could cause fire to creep west of the Liard River and grow north. This could make containing fire on the island difficult and prevent the fire’s crossing to the Liard River’s eastern shore.

Fort Liard has been under evacuation notice since Friday.

“The Hamlet of Fort Liard is working with heavy equipment to reduce fuel in strategic locations in the Hamlet to increase wildfire protections,” reads a press release.
