Sadness in the Sahtu after teen found deceased in Norman Wells

Two communities are in mourning after a Colville Lake teenager was found dead in Norman Wells over the weekend.

The Coroner’s office confirms it is investigating a sudden death, but it is, “in the preliminary stages of the investigation and cannot share any further details.”

Community members are saddened by the tragedy, which apparently took the life of a 16-year-old male youth.

A search had taken place looking for the teenager, who some residents say got separated from a group of people on Saturday.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Matt Halstead confirmed Norman Wells RCMP responded to a sudden death and that “the incident is not believed to be criminal in nature.”

Tributes for the teen and his family can be found online, but CKLB has chosen not to name him until he is officially identified.

Norman Wells’ Lynda MacCauley issued a Facebook post on behalf of the deceased’s family which asked for some “time and space” to be given to the teen’s parents.

“On behalf of the family I was asked to post. It is with great sadness to announce the (teen’s) passing. Please pray for his parents, his uncle, his grandparents and their family.”

Another post on social media read: “Words cannot express how heartbreaking it is to hear about another nephew being gone. Prayers for my cousin … and his family.”

This is a developing story, which will be updated.
