The Department of Environment and Natural Resources is advising residents in Norman Wells and Yellowknife of recent bear encounters.

Specifically near Norman Wells, ENR says there is an adult black bear near Sucker Creek “that may demonstrate aggressive behaviour”.

ENR says the bear and other wildlife are attracted by fishing guts and other waste.

“Caution is advised while out on the land as bears are now putting on winter fat stores,” reads the notice.

In Yellowknife, there have been black bear reports near Niven Lake, Gitzel Street and near the airport.

ENR says officers are patrolling the areas and have set live traps.
