The community government of Behchokǫ̀ has set a temporary prohibition order on Sept 15, due to an increase in alcohol consumption and unlawful behaviour in the community including Rae, Edzo and the Frank Channel.
“No person shall consume, purchase, sell or transport liquor within the boundaries,” reads a social media post.
Clifford Daniels is the chief of Behchokǫ̀, he says what triggered the response was the containment order put in place earlier this month.
“We do see some intoxicated people in public and we want to stop that and also keep them from gathering, mingling, or party,” he says.
The community has put in temporary prohibition orders many times before and residents are still not convinced with its ability to stop alcohol from getting into the community.
Even Chief Daniels isn’t convinced but says at this ‘dire’ time needs to be done to help reduce the transmission of COVID-19.
“We’ve realized that it doesn’t really work. Alcohol will find its way into the community one way or another,” he adds.
Despite his best efforts, Chief Daniels is hopeful his community will continue to follow pandemic protocols and the orders put in place by the chief public health officer.
The community containment order expires on Sept 23 at 11:59 p.m.
The prohibition order is set to expire on October 12 at 11:59 p.m.
