The federal government is investing $19.2 million in an effort to deal with the housing crisis in the NWT.

Ahmed Hussen, federal minister of Families, Children and Social Development, said in a virtual press conference that the money will support around 500 low-income residents of the NWT between 2021 and 2028.

Hussen says the money will be going directly to those in need.

A press release says qualifying households can receive monthly benefits between $200 and $800 for household costs.

Territorial housing minister Paulie Chinna says applicants can reach out to the local housing districts and local housing authorities.

The money comes from the Canada – Northwest Territories Benefit, a seven-year bilateral agreement between the governments of Canada and Northwest Territories, under the National Housing Strategy (NHS).
