By-election for Monfwi set for July 27

A by-election has been called for the Monfwi riding.

The seat in the Legislative Assembly became vacant when Jackson Lafferty resigned from the position on June 4. He held the seat for 16 years.

Margaret Thom, Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, issued a Writ of Election Order, a press release said. The returning officer was instructed to issue the writ of election on June 28, and that should if more than one candidate runs, the election will be held on July 27.

Monfwi electors can access voter registration on June 14 and absentee ballots will begin being accepted that day.

The Returning Officer’s office will receive nomination papers until 2 p.m. on July 2, the press release said.

The Monfwi riding includes Behchokǫ̀, Gamètì, Whatì and Wekweètì.
