Senator Margaret Dawn Anderson of the Northwest Territories has joined the Progressive Senate Group.
“In the two years since my appointment, I have learned a great deal from my respected colleagues about the important role we as senators play in the development of a better future for all Canadians,” Anderson said in a written statement. “I look forward to being able to lend a northern perspective and apply my experience with consensus-based decision-making in the Progressive Senators Group.”
Anderson’s bio in the senate website describes her as a proud Inuvialuk who was born and raised in Tuktoyaktuk. It says her professional life has allowed her to engage and collaborate with the majority of the 33 communities throughout the NWT.
She has been a senator since 2018.
The Progressive Group now has 12 members, the Conservatives hold 20 seats, the Canadian Senators Group hold 12 seats, the Independents hold 42 seats, five seats are unaffiliated and 14 seats remain vacant.
The Progressive Group website says it holds a philosophy that the members share “the responsibility to advance the public good, including advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, so that each and every Canadian has an opportunity to lead a full and productive life.”
The Progressive leader, Jane Cordy tweeted that Anderson “brings a wealth of knowledge about the North and its unique concerns.”
