Délı̨nę has signed an agreement with the federal government to benefit the community in remediation projects around Great Bear Lake.
The agreement is a first step “towards ensuring Délı̨nę community members have a say in decisions about the clean-up of abandoned mine sites near their homes,” reads a news release.
The release adds that under the agreement “all major decisions regarding the remediation of the sites are made by consensus of the two governments.”
Ɂek’wahtı̨dǝ́ Leeroy Andre said, “The remediation project will be good for our community, for our people and, indeed, for all the people of Canada as we restore this magnificent site to preserve the integrity of the biosphere.”
A procurement strategy that would include Indigenous opportunities, local participation in the competitive process, and training are part of ongoing discussions of how Délı̨nę will benefit from the project.
The Great Bear Lake Remediation Project includes remediation of several sites and is funded under the Northern Abandoned Mine Reclamation program.
