The Government of the Northwest Territories is extending COVID-19 relief modifications to income assistance until the end of September.

Income assistance was modified by the GNWT in March to exempt the Canada Emergency Response Benefit and the Canada Emergency Student Benefit from income assistance calculations.

Additionally, the reliefs allow monetary donations to be exempt from counting as income and clients no longer need to file reports in-person to receive payment.

The announcement was made by R.J. Simpson, minister of education, culture and employment, in a press release.

“Over the last several months we have made numerous changes to provide further support to the people of the North during these rapidly changing times,” he says, “I am pleased to announce that we are not only making sure these changes continue, we are enhancing them to better serve our residents.”

The measures will be reviewed again in September.
