A young man from Gameti died this weekend after his snowmobile fell through the ice on Rae Lake.

Gameti RCMP says officers responded to a call around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday about someone had possible fallen through the ice.

According to a news release, an aerial search found a hole in the ice with a toboggan nearby.

Community members helped officers find the dead man submerged in water.

CKLB’s Marie Rose Blackduck spoke with Fred Mantla about how the community is affected by the loss of the young man. You can listen to the interview in Tłı̨chǫ below.

The territory’s chief coroner has ordered an post-mortem examination.

“The break up conditions on our waterways can be challenging, and RCMP would like to remind travellers to be cautious on any frozen ice and open water,” said police.
