Recycling processing centres get $5,000 from ENR

Recycling depots are getting a financial boost to survive the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has announced it will offer a one-time payment of $5,000 to processing centres in the NWT.

There are only three processing centres eligible for the money, in Inuvik, Yellowknife and Hay River.

The department also said it will follow through with grants for the dozen depots across the territory.

The total of the grant depends on the size of the community and whether its run by a school or non-profit organization.

All recycling processors and depots have been closed since March 19 to maintain social distancing rules.

To be clear, this funding does not mean they will re-open any time soon.

In a news release, the government says, “Residents are encouraged to hold on to their bottles until depots are able to re-open.”
