RCMP have now confirmed CKLB’s report from earlier Tuesday afternoon that a missing fishing boat has been found capsized on Great Slave Lake.
Searchers have been looking for the fishing boat from Hay River with four men aboard since Monday morning.
RCMP stated in a news release at about 3:30 pm Tuesday that at approximately 9:00 am, a CC138 Twin Otter from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at Canadian Forces Base Trenton, Ont. spotted what appeared to be a vessel partially submerged in the water near Windy Bay, on Great Slave Lake.
Windy Bay is apparently on the west side of the lake.
It’s still not clear at this point whether there are any survivors.
“Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary and Canadian Coast Guard vessels investigated and confirmed that the submerged boat was the one used by the overdue fishermen. There were no sightings of the fishermen, The search for the four fishermen continues,” RCMP state.
Mounties in Hay River initially received a report just after 4:00 am Monday that the men were believed to have been travelling by boat on the lake but were overdue.
The group had left the commercial dock in Hay River early Sunday and were to travel to Sulphur Point on the lake’s south shore, east of Hay River, to check fishing nets, police stated.
Police say the group was scheduled to be back before dark on Sunday.
The search, involving military and civilian aircraft and boats has been going on since Monday.
