Plugging the meter in Yellowknife just got a bit more painful.

The City of Yellowknife is in the middle of jacking up parking meter rates for physical meters when paying with coins and digital payments made via the Passport Parking Canada App.

Parking meter rates increase to $2.50 per hour at one-and and two-hour meters.

Rates for nine-hour meters have increased to $1 per hour.

The City’s website states that, parking meter increases are held to multiples of 25 cents “as a convenience to the public.”

This means 25% increases at short-term meters and 33.3% for the nine-hour spaces.

The lower cost for the longer time-period is to encourage people working downtown to park at the nine-hour meters, allowing those doing business in the downtown to use the one-and two-hour meters.

The Municipal Enforcement Division will be reprogramming all parking meters with the new rates until April 30.

Corporate communications advisor Abby Schelew stated in a release that during this transition period, residents may notice some parking meters at the previous rate and some at new rates.

She noted that the Passport Parking Canada App will be updated with the new rates on May 1.

A parking pass for use at the nine-hour parking meters is available at City Hall for $126 a month or $1,048 a year.

But what if you don’t like paying for parking? Then either wait until you turn 60 years old and get a free seniors pass for the short-time meters, or be a tourist and pick up a three-day visitors parking pass.

It’s also important to know parking meter violations are enforced Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding public holidays.
