Major shipment of illegal liquor seized headed to Aklavik
RCMP say case represents a potentially large reduction in harm to the Beaufort Delta community
Inuvik RCMP say they’ve made a significant seizure of illicit alcohol after a tip from a member of the public.
On April 15th, Inuvik RCMP received a report that a large amount of liquor had been discovered packaged in a shipment destined for Aklavik, after the shipper conducted an inspection of the package in accordance with its own policy.
A Territorial Liquor inspector was engaged to assist police as part of the investigation, stated an RCMP release.
Upon examination of the liquor, it was determined that it originated from outside the Territory.
As importing more than three litres of spirits into the Northwest Territories is a violation of the Liquor Act, the alcohol, totaling 127.44 litres, was seized as part of the investigation.
While there are no liquor restrictions in the community of Aklavik, a shipment of this size was likely destined to be bootlegged, and this seizure represents a potentially large reduction in harm to the community, where alcohol continues to play a role in many crimes.
This investigation remains ongoing, and officers encourage anyone with information on this matter, especially residents of Aklavik, to contact their local detachment.
