UPDATE: RCMP asking for photos, videos of incidents near Inuvik airport
Tuktoyaktuk man faces 11 charges, including attempted murder with a firearm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
A 21-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder, along with 10 counts of offences, after a woman was shot outside the Inuvik airport on September 20.
Officers received a report on Saturday at approximately 1:04 pm that a 58-year-old woman had been shot outside the airport while the suspect fled in a pickup truck.
Bystanders provided first aid until the victim was taken to the hospital by ambulance. She is reported to be in stable condition. Police say she and the suspect were known to each other.
As officers worked to locate the suspect, the Dempster Highway and Mackenzie Ferry were temporarily closed. A public alert was issued to advise residents to shelter in place.
Police received another report at approximately 1:55 pm that a pickup truck matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle had struck six people on the Dempster Highway.
The suspect was located and arrested in a clearing near the highway shortly after 5 pm.
RCMP say all victims in these incidents are reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect, Maverick Elias of Tuktoyaktuk, has been charged with attempted murder with a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, pointing a firearm, aggravated assault, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and six counts of assault with a weapon.
He appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody.
The investigation remains ongoing, with support provided G Division Forensic Identification Section, the Major Crimes Unit, and a collision analyst.
