New Support Assistants Initiative to help ease Jordan’s Principle pain
The GNWT move in response to funding cuts, application delays by Ottawa to key program for Indigenous kids
The GNWT will announce new supports to backfill somewhat to Ottawa’s cuts to the Jordan’s Principle program.
On Thursday, August 28th, Minister Caitlin Cleveland will be leading the conference to announce the launch of a new Support Assistants Initiative, to help ease the loss of dozens of educational assistant positions in Yellowknife alone.
The announcement stated that this is a temporary measure, and is coming as a direct response to recent changes made by Ottawa to the funding of Jordan’s Principle.
Jordan’s Principle is a human rights principle that is designed to provide targeted aid to Indigenous students to make sure that they do not face any obstacles in receiving government services due to their heritage.
Also at the conference will be Jamie Fulford, the Deputy Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, and Shirley Zouboules, the Superintendent of the Yellowknife Education District No. 1.
CKLB will be at the conference, on behalf of our listeners.
