The City of Yellowknife Fire Division, in partnership with the Government of the Northwest Territories Department of Environment and Climate Change and FireSmart NWT, is expanding wildfire resilience efforts for 2025.
Free Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) assessments are now available for residents of Yellowknife and N’dilǫ. These assessments are conducted by trained Fire Division staff and provide personalized recommendations to help homeowners reduce the risk of wildfire damage around their properties.
New this year, the City is launching a FireSmart Neighbourhood Recognition Program. This initiative encourages residents to work together by appointing a local “champion” to lead fire prevention efforts and coordinate with the Fire Division on education and mitigation activities.
To support cleanup and fire-safe landscaping, the City has increased capacity for free disposal of FireSmart yard waste at the Solid Waste Facility. Residents must identify the load as FireSmart yard waste at the gate to qualify for waived tipping fees. Please note that commercial land-clearing waste, tree stumps, demolition materials, soil, and rocks are not accepted under this free program.
Residents interested in a FireSmart home assessment or learning more about getting their neighbourhood involved are encouraged to call the Yellowknife Fire Division at (867)766-5502 or email firehalladministration@yellowknife.ca.
