Hay River RCMP say they have arrested an Alberta man who was under court-ordered conditions to remain outside the Northwest Territories following previous drug convictions.
According to a Monday news release, police conducted a traffic stop on Highway 1 on April 3 after receiving information that Abel Leule was travelling in the Hay River area.
He was found in the vehicle along with $2,870 in cash, which police believe to be proceeds of crime.
Following the investigation, the 20-year-old has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and failure to comply with a release order.
Leule was previously convicted of drug-related and other offences committed in the NWT and was sentenced to 19 months in custody on August 9, 2024. Most of that sentence was served while he was on remand.
He is expected to appear in court at a later date in relation to the recent charges.
RCMP are asking residents with information about drug-related crimes to contact their local detachment to support ongoing Controlled Drugs and Substances Act investigations.
