The Gamètì and Wekweètì winter roads are expected to close for the season on Thursday, April 10 at 10 a.m., according to the Government of the Northwest Territories.

In a 72-hour advance closure notice issued Monday, the GNWT says warmer temperatures and deteriorating road conditions have prompted the early closure. Until then, both roads will remain open for nighttime travel only, from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. daily.

Travellers are being advised to watch for overflow and slippery sections, and to slow down for construction along all sections of the road.

The closure comes earlier than usual—the winter roads to Gamètì and Wekweètì typically remain open until around April 15.
